"Ferguson's cows going to water" is another "painter's painting". A delicious small work with multi-layering of paint, intense color and incised marks adding visual interest to this composition about extreme heat, dust and a search for water. The inspiration for this painting came from several drives by a cow-trampled creek with its lone tree. Click on image to enlarge.

This work is what I would call "a painter's painting", meaning that the paint surface itself is subject matter beyond the image of the elk/landscape. A small work (shown here close to actual size), "Cow Elk" is the result of alternating paint layers and scrape-downs yielding a rich surface.
"Cow Elk" was exhibited only once, in the Regional Juried Art Exhibition at the Carnegie Art Center (Walla Walla, Washington); Juror Lee Musgrave, Curator of the Mary Hill Art Museum (Washington), awarded "Cow Elk" the Juror's Award.
